I could see a smile at the edge of his mouth but he was not going to look up and meet my eyes.  He nodded when I asked questions but was happy to be left alone.  But here we are, six months into the school year and he has begun to step out.  First it was a small wave to acknowledge me when I entered the classroom.  Then he quietly answered my question as we worked side by side at the play dough table.  And last week, he yelled out to me as I walked onto the playground, “Hey.  Look at this!”   And I could see all the work he had been doing, testing the waters, checking his courage, and finally stepping out with strength and confidence.
